EEG hosted the I EULUSO Conference – External Relations of the European Union with the Lusophone Countries

On April 27 and 28, the 1st EULUSO Conference – External Relations of the European Union with the Lusophone Countries took place, under the aegis of the Jean Monnet EULUSO Module, funded by the European Commission. The event brought together at the School of Economics and Management students and academics from different Portuguese-speaking countries to discuss relations between the European Union (EU) and the Portuguese-speaking countries. In this first edition, in which Brazil was given prominence, the participants attended a lecture given by Brazilian foreign policy expert, Professor Miriam Gomes Saraiva, from the State University of Rio de Janeiro, under the topic ‘From Bolsonaro to Lula: The Place of the European Union in Brazilian Foreign Policy’. The event’s program also featured three panels composed of eight junior researchers (master’s and doctoral students), which addressed different topics and debates relevant to EU-Brazil relations. The event closed with a round table discussion entitled ‘EU-Brazil Relations: Challenges and Prospects’. This was attended by Professor Miriam Gomes Saraiva, João Queirós, Deputy Director at the Directorate-General for Foreign Policy of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Laura Ferreira-Pereira, Professor and Researcher at the Centre for Research in Political Science of the University of Minho (CICP-UMinho) and Scientific Coordinator of the EULUSO Project.

In addition to this conference, the EULUSO Module is dedicated to the publication of scientific papers, among which the recently published chapter “The Portuguese Science Diplomacy and EU’s External Activities with Lusophone Africa: Looking at the Co-building Approach” stands out. Since February 2022, the module’s team has already given dozens of teaching hours dedicated to the relations between the EU and Lusophone countries, in the context of courses of the undergraduate and master’s degree in International Relations at the University of Minho, as well as in the framework of EULUSO Seminars presented online. There were also EULUSO in High Schools activities organized in partnership with Carlos Amarante Secondary School. Over the next year the EULUSO Module will organize new online seminars with experts from several Portuguese-speaking countries. The II EULUSO Conference is scheduled to take place in the second quarter of 2024.
