Lúcio de Sousa é Professor Associado na Universidade de Estudos Estrangeiros de Tóquio. O seu livro “The Portuguese Slave Trade in Early Modern Japan. Merchants, Jesuits and Japanese, Chinese, and Korean Slaves”, publicado pela Editora Brill (Leiden, Boston), recebeu o prémio da Fundação Calouste Gulbenkien 2019 e da Academia Portuguesa de História (Ministério da Cultura do Governo Português) na categoria “História da Presença de Portugal no Mundo”.
