Seminar “Data Analytic & Methodologies to Detect & Disarm Disinformation & Extremism”

04/12/2023

The Research Centre in Political Science (CICP) invites all interested parties to attend the seminar “Data Analytic & Methodologies to Detect & Disarm Disinformation & Extremism”, to be held at 7.30pm on April 18th, in room 0.04 of the EEG at the University of Minho.

The event will be presented by Professor Doowan Lee.

Abstract:

Disinformation has become a critical threat to social, economic, and political integrity. Governmental and commercial solutions appear insufficient to tackle this rapidly expanding problem set. Combined with so-called generative AI such as ChatGPT that can enable cost-effective disinformation campaigns and social engineering, the danger to open society and intellectual integrity is unprecedented. Unfortunately, few have analyzed these issues with robust data analysis to ascertain and identify what factors accelerate or defeat the propagation of disinformation, hate speech, or online extremism. This seminar will focus on the nature of the threat as well as analytic implications in order to bring a scientific approach to disinformation.
